COVID-19 changed so many things about the way we live, that it is hard to pinpoint the biggest change. One of the biggest is certainly the relationship we have with our homes. Where before, the home was often the place where we spent downtime when no working, playing, or vacationing, now the home is all of those things and more. For many of us, we staycation at home, we entertain at home, we work from home and maybe even do school from home. This is changing the way people design their living space too, and fueling the biggest post-COVID home design trends.
Home Office
The home office is the most popular addition for most people right now, since they’ve had to spend the last year plus working from home and many will continue to in the future. Many people quickly discovered that the dining room table simply wouldn’t cut it as an office. They need a dedicated space with comfortable furniture, and might even benefit from added extras, like a separate entrance, a dedicated bathroom, or a small refrigerator.
Home Classroom
Similar to the home office, the home classroom became a mandatory addition during COVID and is persisting in some form. Even for kids who have gone back to school in person, having a special, designated school space in the home is a great idea. This can be a place to work on homework or projects that is designed for studious focus. Pay attention to the lighting you choose to minimize screen glare and make sure there are plenty of kid-safe outlets. Consider letting your kids help plan the space and make choices about colors and wall décor so they feel ownership of the area.
Outdoor Living Space
Since vacations fell by the wayside during COVID, many people turned to staycations at home, and having a beautiful, peaceful outdoor living area makes that much nicer. As you plan the space, keep in mind what you want to do there – if you want to cook outside, make room for a nice outdoor kitchen, but if you want to relax by water, consider a pond, pool or hot tub. These are all good ideas for home design ideas.
Hobby Room
Many people took up hobbies during COVID, so consider making a dedicated space for you to pursue it. This could be an art studio if your new hobby is artistic, a home gym if your new hobby is athletic, or a leisure area like a wine cellar or home brewery.
