Plan a Custom Home That is Protected From Flooding

There are plenty of beautiful locations in Maryland that are also in danger of flooding, but this shouldn’t drive you away from building a home.

Do you live in a particularly flood-prone area?  There are plenty of beautiful locations in Maryland that are also in danger of flooding, but this shouldn’t drive you away from building a home.  There are excellent additions you can add that will greatly increase your flood protection without having to put your home on stilts.  When you’re planning your custom home, consider the following aspects that will help you to keep your home beautiful for years to come.

Dry Floodproofing

When you seal off windows and doors, this is called dry floodproofing.  You’re going to add aspects to your home that will protect it from flooding in every sense of the word.  When it comes to keeping your home dry, there are great solutions that will keep water out so your home stays free of damage.  Using sealant or a waterproof membrane, dry floodproofing is an excellent solution.

Protect Your HVAC

It’s common practice to keep your HVAC on the lowest level of the home, but this can be a problem if there is a flood.  An easy solution is to elevate the system.  You can build platforms for them on the side of your home, or simply move them to higher ground.  When your HVAC is protected from potential flooding, your home will stay dry and warm.

Flood-Proof Landscaping

Protecting your home through landscaping is another great technique.  You can find plants that will soak up a significant amount of water, so you’ll be protected by flooding while your backyard flourishes with flora.  You can also install flood walls in particularly flood-prone areas.  Instead of using concrete or asphalt for your driveways and pathways, consider a more flood-proof alternative, such as porous pavement.  This will allow water to pass through harmlessly into the soil, rather than gather on your pavement.
