According to the CDC, every single year, at least one of three adults aged 65 or older will experience some type of fall. This isn’t something to look forward to really, but it is something you can prepare for if you’re approaching the age of 65. Aging in place precautions for custom homes help prevent falls, which can become a serious issue as you age. Since a lot of people like to stay in their houses for as long as they can, there is a lot they can do to ensure their home is safe. Read on for a few excellent aging-in-place features you must have in your very own custom home!
Multi-Level Homes
If you decide to age in place in a multi-level house, you could do a few things to still make sure it is safe. Make sure to design the master bed and bathroom on your ground floor. Include at least one full bathroom on each floor, and plan for hallways and doors to be wide enough to fit into a walker or wheelchair in your home. If possible, design an elevator or lift for your house. Robin Ford Builders can assist you in planning this out. Also, make sure there is enough light in each room of your home and make sure light switches and lamps are easy to turn off and on.
Aging in Place Bathrooms
Bathrooms have a surprisingly high injury rate for people as they age. About two-thirds of all injuries happen while showering or bathing. Consider building curb-less showers with flat surfaces and flooring to prevent slips, falls, or other injuries in your aging-in-place home. These allow you to wheel a wheelchair or walker right into the shower. Tub and shower combinations should have shower curtains instead of sliding doors on tracks. Make sure to install some kind of bench or seat in your shower to sit on too. Grab bars are helpful, too, since they’re designed to help people get up and down by holding their weight and aiding them with mobility. A non-slip map inside the tub or shower can help any potential falls too. There is plenty to be done to safety-proof your aging-in-place home, so do not hesitate to ask us if you have more questions!
