Deciding that it’s time for a new home is both exciting and anxiety-producing. Will you be able to find a home that meets your needs? One way to get the home of your dreams is to have it custom built. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean less work for you because doing the entire design of a brand new living space is plenty of work all on its own. But with some help from the right builder, you could find a design that works perfectly for you and your family and meets all your needs. This process does not happen overnight, however, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to do the research that needs to be done. There are tons of different designs, layouts, floor plans, and great ideas on the Internet but you have to find the ones that are right for you. Read on for some tips for choosing the right custom home design for your family and your future.
Start With Your Needs
How many people will be living in the home right away, and how will that number increase (having kids or having relatives move in) or decrease (kids growing up and moving out) in the future? You need bedrooms for each person, but having a guest room or two might be useful as well. Additionally, should everyone in the home have their own bathroom? It would make getting ready in the morning easier. Do you envision this as your forever home, where you will need to have accommodations for aging in place? Consider having the master on the ground floor so that you don’t need to move it later. Will you need privacy in some areas of the home or will an open concept work? If you’re likely to work from home, open concept may not be the best bet. Finally, do you need to be close to work, close to specific schools, or within walking distance of shops? Your family’s needs will influence everything from the location of the home to the number of bathrooms you should plan on, so begin with that list.
Add In Your Wants for a Design
The house should be about more than just your needs. Once you have the must-have’s listed out, make another list of what you want. If you want to be able to entertain more, an entertainment space should be on the list. Perhaps you want an in-home movie theater or an outdoor kitchen. Try to come up with your top-five or top-ten wants for your new home.
Research Floor Design Plans
Once you have your lists, start looking at floor plans and see how other homes have fit those different spaces together. If you have an aesthetic preference in terms of style (mid-century, ultra-modern, etc), that can help you in narrowing down floor plans to look for.
