Building a home is a process. Most custom home builders can suggest a general amount of months that it takes from designing a house to move-in day. Here on the east coast, the United States Census Bureau suggests that figure is typically around seven to nine months. Some considerations can be controlled, and some can’t. At the end of the day, the main goal is for you to have an incredible house that fits your family’s needs. To learn about all of the factors that go into the custom home building timeline, read on!
The Look of Your Custom House
As you might suspect, the more complicated your home, the longer that it will take to design and build. A ranch home at 1,500 square feet will require different specifications than one that is 3,500 square feet. For this very reason, custom home builders will take time upfront talking about all of the intricacies involved in unusual or complicated floor plans. It is fine to build your custom home with all of the offerings and amenities that you want, but it might add time to the final project.
Gaining Permission to Build
Even if you own the land you are trying to build on, you will have to go through the process of gaining permission for your house to go on that plot of land. Each area has its own regulations and procedures that you have to go through, and some governments and municipalities approve permits much quicker than others. Make sure that you talk to your custom home builder and know ahead of time what you should expect.
The Weather
Here on the east coast, and more specifically the Mid-Atlantic, weather can be unpredictable. This includes bad or “iffy” weather, like rain, sleet, snow, freeze and thaw cycles, and much more. The weather is going to play a role in how long it will take for you to build your custom home. Plus, the time of year that you decide to build will change the end date too.
Last Second Changes
A lot of custom home builders will try to get clients to make all of their home building decisions ahead of time, but sometimes people can change their minds. When this happens, it puts a delay in the building plan. Keep this in mind when you build your custom home plan.
